Joey Carbery will miss three or four weeks of action due to the hand injury he suffered while making his debut for Bordeaux against Lyon last Saturday.

According to Sud Ouest, Carbery underwent surgery on the fracture on Monday.

However, the injury is not as serious as first feared and will only keep the former Leinster, Munster and Ireland out-half out for a few weeks.

Carbery impressed in the first-half of his new club’s second match of the Top 14 campaign, but was withdrawn at half-time injured.

He has endured a rotten run of luck with injury since 2018 and had moved to France on a two-year deal for a fresh start having lost his place in the Ireland squad.

He’ll miss the chance to go head to head with Owen Farrell and face his old coach Stuart Lancaster when Bordeaux host Racing 92 this weekend and will likely sit out the meetings with Toulouse away and Bayonne and Perpignan at home.

However, the news means he will be back midway through November and should get a chance to establish himself around the November international window when his rival Mathieu Jalibert will likely be away with France.

Bordeaux will face Ulster in the Champions Cup pool stage in December.
