Death of a GAA club: Despite all the goodwill and volunteers, eventually the numbers game becomes impossible to win

They did all they could to keep Shroid Slashers alive but for a long time the club teetered on the brink, living day to day. The few dedicated volunteers left would go into Longford town a couple of miles away and start knocking on doors looking for kids to play. Keeping them playing was the troublesome part and eventually the pool dried up.

In recent years the club decided it was time to turn off the life support. The Slashers had been there for the best part of a century and won a junior football championship in 2009, reaching another final two years later. But for 20 years they had no reliable underage structure and no local primary school to draw from.
